To give you a brief and simple explanation of what it is and how it works, you have a device that is called an IR or Infrared Illuminator which emits an invisible light that cannot be seen by the human eye. This invisible light can be seen or “viewed” by security cameras or viewer. Even though the IR light is invisible, you can still “see” some of the light when it is being emitted from the IR device. The IR light is measured by a rating called “NM” or Nanometer.

For example, if you take a commercial IR illuminator and look at the NM rating, the higher the number, such as 940NM the more covert the light will be. However, the lower the NM number, such as 840NM the easier it will be detected when looking directly into the IR illuminator.

We do not recommend looking directly into an IR illuminator as in doing this can cause damage to your eyes - the light can burn your retinas. Definitely not fun!
